GLP-1 Medications: How They Support Weight Loss & Health

When it comes to weight management, finding the right approach can be challenging. GLP-1 medications, such as liraglutide, semaglutide, and tirzepatide, have gained attention for their ability to help regulate hunger, control cravings, and support metabolism. These prescription medications work by influencing key hormones and organs involved in appetite and digestion, making it easier to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

In this blog, we explore how GLP-1s work, who may benefit from them, and what to consider before starting them as part of your weight management plan.

What Are GLP-1s?

GLP-1 receptor agonists, or GLP-1s, are prescription-strength anti-obesity medications (AOMs) that help support weight management. They work by signaling the brain, stomach, and other organs to:

  • Reduce hunger & cravings
  • Increase fullness on smaller portions
  • Improve insulin sensitivity
  • Support fat-burning (lipolysis)

Another medication, tirzepatide, combines GLP-1 and GIP, offering additional benefits for weight management.

Who Can Use GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1s can be helpful for people trying to lose weight, maintain weight loss, or prevent weight regain. They are sometimes used before bariatric surgery to help patients lose 5-10% of their weight, which can reduce surgical risks. After surgery, GLP-1s may help with:1

  • Breaking weight loss plateaus
  • Preventing weight regain
  • Supporting long-term success

Are There Side Effects?

Like any medication, GLP-1s can have side effects. The most common ones include:

  • Digestive issues—nausea, constipation, diarrhea, bloating, vomiting, abdominal pain, gas
  • Nutritional issues—protein calorie malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies
  • Other symptoms—headache, dizziness, slowed digestion

Nutrition matters, too! Since GLP-1s can affect appetite, it’s important to get enough protein, vitamins, and nutrients. This is especially true for those who have had bariatric surgery. Be sure to:

  • Follow up with your healthcare team
  • Get regular lab work to check vitamin levels
  • Work with a dietitian to ensure balanced nutrition

Is GLP-1 Right for You?

GLP-1 medications are just one tool in a comprehensive weight management plan that includes nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes. If you're wondering whether GLP-1s could be right for you, talk to your doctor or dietitian to explore your options.
